What is COMEX? The Commodity Exchange, Inc. (COMEX) is the primary futures Globextions exchange for trading metals such as gold, silver, copper, and aluminum. Established in 1933 and now operating under CME Group (following its merger with NYMEX), COMEX serves as the primary price discovery platform and global price benchmark for precious and industrial metals.  Trading on COMEX takes place electronically via the CME Globex platform, providing 24-hour access to institutional investors, mining conglomerates, bullion dealers, and retail traders around the world.

Why COMEX Dictates Global Metal Prices
1. Global Liquidity & Volume: COMEX processes hundreds of thousands of derivative contracts daily, making its settlement prices the global reference for physical bullion dealers and domestic exchanges (such as India's MCX or China's SHFE).
2. Standardized Quality & Delivery Rules: COMEX enforces strict assay requirements (e.g., gold must test to a minimum of 99.5% fineness) to maintain physical delivery integrity.
3. Price Discovery Mechanism: Because COMEX operates electronically nearly around the clock, metal prices continuously adapt to macroeconomic news and global currency movements.
4. Central Clearing Protection: CME Clearing acts as the central counterparty to every transaction, eliminating direct default risk between buyers and sellers.
